About Us

GNRS Engineering, formerly known as your one stop engine reconditioning shop, has now limited all it's services to only skimming brake discs.

GNRS Engineering, located in Coventry, West Midlands (UK), was founded in 1985 by two partners as a family-owned business.

For decades, we specialized in supplying to the aftermarket automotive industry, focusing on the machining of various engine parts such as crankshafts, cylinder block boring, honing, valve replacement, and pressure testing. Our services also included the supply, assembly, and disassembly of all types of engines. Our founder's expertise and dedication established GNRS Engineering as a reputable name within the industry. In March 2024, the original founders retired, and we were deeply saddened by the passing of Gursharan Singh Sehmi (also known as Sammy or Kugi) in June 2024. In honor of his legacy, we continue to offer brake disc skimming services, retaining a craft he was passionate about. We are committed to upholding the high standards and values he instilled in us, striving to deliver exceptional customer satisfaction with prompt and reliable service.

Get in touch.

Tell us about your brake discs, drum / flywheel and book in with us via email or message.
We will inform you about our charges, rarely, depending on the job, there may be a change in the prices we have already quoted on our website.

Drop them off.

If you are local to Coventry, we will let you know of our drop off point(s), so you can drop of your brake discs / drum / flywheel. Alternatively, you can post them to us.
Once recieved, we assess the job, inform you of charges & how long it will take (max 5 working days).

3.

Collect them.

We do the required service and inform you where and when you may collect your brake discs. Or, we post them back to you.

Brake disc skimming is a process where a small layer of the brake disc’s surface is removed using a specialized lathe machine. This procedure eliminates imperfections such as warping, scoring, or uneven wear, restoring the disc to a smooth and even surface.

Brake discs should be skimmed when there are signs of wear or damage, such as vibrations when braking, scoring, or uneven braking performance. It's also done when new brake pads are installed to ensure even contact with the discs.

Skimming is a cost-effective alternative to replacing the brake discs. Instead of buying new discs, the old ones are resurfaced, prolonging their life. Replacement is necessary when the discs are too worn or damaged beyond repair.

Not all brake discs can be skimmed. The discs must have sufficient thickness remaining after skimming to ensure safe operation. If the discs are too thin, they need to be replaced instead of skimmed. At GNRS, we do not skim motorcyle brake discs, carbon fibre discs or ceramic ones.

The skimming process typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour per disc, depending on the severity of wear and the equipment used. Some shops may complete the job using on-car lathes, however, at GNRS we request you bring us your brake discs off the vehicle.

Yes, brake disc skimming is safe as long as it's performed correctly (by a professional), and the discs remain within the manufacturer's recommended thickness specifications. It restores the braking surface and improves brake performance.

A brake disc can be skimmed multiple times, as long as it remains within the minimum thickness specified by the manufacturer. The number of times depends on the disc’s initial thickness and how much material is removed during each skimming.
